Fille Wines® 2007 Crush The 2007 Crush is over! The wines are now "sleeping" in barrels. But there was a lot of activity to get to this point. Here are some of the photos showing the frenzy. All photos courtesy Rick Samco. Special thanks to the Crush Crew: Joel The Stalwart, Bill The Solver, Rick The Hipster, Martha The Artist, Miriam The Jokester, Mark The Card Shark, Dr. Bob The Siphonist, Don The Winegrower, Dylan The Sleepwalking Guitarist, the August Cellars Crew, and of course, Mona. The part of the crush we would all like to forget is waiting around for the grapes and/or the use of the crush pad. But it has its moments:
When the grapes come in, the first thing we do is to sort them. Anything less than perfect is thrown away. When the fruit is very clean and ripe, it's pretty easy. But if there are unripe berries in the mix, or some rot, it is much more tedious. With the grapes moving by on the shake table, you can feel like Lucy at the candy factory at times.
As the grapes are crushed, they fall below to a fermentation tank. Once filled, the tank has to be removed from the crush pad and brought inside the fermentation room.
When
the crush for a given vineyard is done, and the grapes look good,
the winemaker is feeling no pain.
